Weekend Wrap-Up Sept. 15-17, 2017

This is the season weekends were made for, when school-aged kids come to appreciate them again and though the weather is still fit for outside enjoyment, the sunburn danger index is a little lower; when festival season aint over and harvest season is well underway…

1. Halifax’s The Word on the Street is getting literal this Saturday from 10-4 at Halifax Central Library! A lot of kid’s stuff will be happening in the BMO Community Room in the morning: picture books about harbour seals and other Atlantic animals, walking bathrooms and the magic of flight, and at noon, there’s a special on the Halifax Explosion. Boom! There are hundreds of readings and activities in total, thousands of books for sale—plenty to see and do at Canada’s largest FREE book and magazine festival!
2. The Halifax Celtic Festival takes place from Wednesday to Sunday at various locations in the city. Saturday is Family Day at the Halifax Forum Multipurpose Centre. Doors open at 10:30, performances include the Dartmouth Pipe Band, Jimmy Sweeny & Kevin Roach, and Diaga. Admission is free to this event as are all festival offerings from The Celtic Cultural Society of Nova Scotia. Talk about the generosity of the Irish! 
3. Always dreamed of getting backstage passes to the hippest local farm? Well now you can because it’s Open Farm Day this Sunday! Go ahead, meet the farmers, and see where your food comes from!Wood’n’Hive Honey in Port Williams is letting the public get as friendly with their bees as anyone could. To get there, take Exit 11 (around Wolfville) and then hang a north on Highway 358 to get to Port Williams. From Port Williams, turn right onto Starrs Point Road, Travel 1.5 kms, and the Honey House will appear on the right.

   Indian Garden Farms is joining in the farmtastic fun and welcoming guests. They are outside of Bridgewater and have a corn maze, hayride tour, and little baby sheep! To get there from highway 103, take, Exit 13, the second B’Water exit, make your way to Highway 3 and head towards Hebbville, pass Hebville and you’ll get to the farm just after Cumings Fire & Safety. 4. It’s also Terry Fox Run time of year! And what a wonderful season it is for a good run, a run made even better if it raises awareness and money for cancer research! The Halifax is on Sunday in Point Pleasant Park. It starts at the lower parking lot past the Shakespeare by the Sea Pavilion. Registration is at 10, the run starts at 11, and the event ends at 2. There are a variety of distances for all ages and skill levels. Urge the kids to challenge themselves, Terry Fox knows that they can do the impossible. Terry’s brother, Fred Fox, will be there with books for sale about Terry’s legacy, and the Dalhousie Health Initiatives Society will be offering free henna and face painting to all participants.Don’t forget to peruse the Urban Parent Calendar for even more festivals and other cool stuff to do this weekend!
