Weekend Wrap-Up Nov. 4-6

November in Halifax doesn’t slow down for anyone and there’s something for everyone all around town: Hal-con, Toopy and Binoo Live! or a ballet, the best Christmas Craft fair of the season or a baby massage class…

1. Welcome geek girls and nerd nephews to this year’s Hal-con! The entire festival runs Friday to Sunday but notably, the Neptune Theatre School is hosting an Improv Workshop at the Convention Centre designed especially for kids, ages 7-12, and it lands on Saturday at 1. Children’s passes already sold out at warp speed—hopefully your stargazers already have theirs. Friday adult day passes should still be available: $30 + fee and tax. The convention’s hours are Friday: 12:30-midnight, Saturday: 9:30-midnight, and Sunday 9:30-7.
2. If you thought this overgrown cartoon mouse (R.O.U.S.?) and tiny white creature (we are almost certain Binoo is a cat) captivated your littles on the screen, imagine them on stage… Toopy and Binoo Live! is coming to the Rebecca Cohn this Sunday. Showtimes are at 1 and 4. Tickets are $30. Just do it, your kids will have fond memories for life.
3. A small, blue swallow has been rumoured to have world-changing abilities. See for yourself if this bird can alter Earth’s course … in the form of ballet. The Happy Prince, an original production presented by The Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, is performed by 24 dancers, ranging in age from 10 to 20. May you be dazzled and your children inspired this Sunday at 1 and 4 at the Spatz Theatre. Tickets are $15 and $17.50.
4. Christmas craft fair season is upon us and this is the Festival of Crafts to make it to. Halifax Forum, 3 massive buildings, a craft show with over 35 years of history. If you’ve only time for one craft fair, why not go to the best attended show of its kind in Eastern Canada? Friday and Saturday 10-9, Sunday 10-5. Get in 2 for 1 after 5 on Saturday, otherwise adults are $8.50 and seniors $7.50, under 12 are free, and, oh yeah, there are door prizes and a little elf told us the big one’s a BIG ONE.
5. Having a new baby can be the best time of your life…unless that baby cries all the time. Massage could help and there’s a class for that! In fact, there’s a series of 4, led by Certified Infant Massage Instructor, Leslie Yip. Registering would be $75 very well spent. The first class is this Sunday from 11-12 in Hammonds Plains at the Lifehouse.
