Weekend Wrap-Up March 23-24, 2018

Here at Urban Parent, we thought long and hard about what your family would like to do this weekend and came up with a great selection! First, you need to eat—we’ve got you covered; next you must dance—got your back there too; and finally, you’ve gotta celebrate! Be it Easter or diversity or both, we’ve got you, Halifax families!

  1. Halifax celebrates burgers and supports Feed NS…All week long from March 22-28! Let Urban Parent slice through the selections of over 120 local restaurants so you can whisk your way to family mealtime satisfaction. Our Halifax Burger Week Family Friendly Top Pics are…

Freeman’s on Quinpool, in Sackville, Downtown, and in Fairview have wicked yummy kid’s menus and their famous Cranberry Chipotle Cheddar Burger for $15.99 is TDF. Now all you have to decide on is which location—whichever is closest, they’re all good!

    La Piazza Ristorante
, a neighbourhood favourite on the corner of Kline and Chebucto—It’s a great spot to bring the whole family. La Piazza’s relaxed atmosphere and cheerful servers allow for children and their parents to feel comfortable while enjoying a family meal out. And best of all, their food has flavours that all ages will enjoy! This applies to their two fresh and delicious burger options for Halifax Burger Week, one being the (incredible) Hulk Burger for $14.

Chain Yard and Unchained Kitchen on Agricola wholeheartedly loves having kids around, so much so that every month they host a special family lunch! At BYOBB grown-ups are welcome to bring the kids to the taproom for activities galore while they kick back a little bit. The next BYOBB is on April 8 from 11-3:30. Plus, there is great food for all ages. This Burger Week, Unchained features The Smoky Gator Hawg for $16.

  1. Get your bodies to a Contra Dance! For the first time in in our seaside city, Halifax Contra Dances presents a Family Friendly Contra Dance on Saturday from 1-3 at All Nations Church on 2535 Robie St. In brief, contra dances are done in simple formations made up of long lines of couples. They are easy to learn and appropriate for children as young as age 7. No previous experience is necessary: enjoy toe-tapping live music while a caller guides you through a series of energetic and playful folk dances from the New England tradition of “Contra”. There is space for younger children to play and you are invited to bring a small snack to share if you can. Admission is $10 for adults and kids enter free or by donation.

  1. On Sunday afternoon from 12-4 at the Ummah Masjid and Community Centre on 2510 St. Matthias St, The Maritime Muslim Academy Parent-Teacher Group will be hosting its 2nd Annual Multicultural Day to showcase the diversity of the beautiful, growing community of students, parents, staff, and volunteers in Halifax! Admission is free. Both parents and children will have a fun time inshaallah, with henna, face painting, food, stage performances, and much more. Tickets for these activities will be sold, so please bring cash. All proceeds will go toward supporting the Maritime Muslim Academy. Oh, and the fun part…it’s a bit of a dress-up affair, families are urged to dress in the attire of their country of origin, so expect to see kilts, dashikis, and thobes all in one community centre!

  1. The Easter Bunny is on the way and this weekend Urban Parent is featuring a Free Family Fun Fair in support of Feed NS on Saturday at the Portland Street Superstore from 11-2. There will be games with prizes, contests, cupcake decorating, selfies with the Easter Bunny, and more! Bring a non-perishable donation for Feed Nova Scotia along with your smiling faces! Other Easter events like Polish Easter Egg Painting and three different Easter Egg Hunts are highlighted on the Urban Parent Calendar in a festive light purple.
