1. Get to know our built environment… there is more than meets the eye behind many doors in Halifax and this weekend there is free access to over 30 interesting venues! The Doors Open Halifax Heritage Society is happy to welcome the public into significant spots for this year’s 5th Anniversary event between 10 and 4 on Saturday and Sunday. Stroll right on into splendid structures in Halifax such as The Dingle Tower in Sir Sandford Flemming Park, beautiful St. Patrick’s Church on the corner of Gottingen and Gerrish, and Dalhousie’s Steel Ocean Sciences Building on Oxford is a must see because…
2. …It’s World Ocean Week! How many mermaids you can find this weekend? With World Oceans Day coming up on June 8, celebrate Oceans Week with the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic where there will be a sea of interesting ocean-based exhibits, and Raina and the Halifax Mermaids will be teaching ocean literacy. Because the museum is participating in Doors Open Halifax, this event will be is a free one! For more that the ocean has in store, this Weekend Wrap-Up’s road-trip worthy recommendation takes you to the Eastern Shore for the Cold Waters Seafood Festival. At Memory Lane Heritage Village, indulge in lobsters and mussels, fishcakes and chowder Saturday and Sunday from 11 to 4! There will be live music, demonstrations, and plenty of fantastic family activities—paint-your-own-buoy, dory rides, and net knitting to name a few. Get day passes or stay the whole weekend! The festival has some great options.
3. The circus is in town! Or rather, our town has a circus, and this weekend you can get to know them better. That’s right, Halifax Circus, located at 1479 Barrington Street, presents a series of shows that lend insight into their process of creation—Halifax Circus Gets Personal—Friday at 7 and Saturday at 2 and 7. Aerials, juggling, partner acrobatics, contortion, balance work…all this can be seen and more for $10-15.
4. Need something wholesome and affordable to do on Friday evening from, say, 6 to 8? Take your kids to participate with you in a Beading Workshop presented by the Indigenous Constituency of the Canadian Federation of Students-Nova Scotia and led by Indigenous Students’ Representative, Kehisha Wilmot at the Muse on Dalhousie campus. Admission is free but attendees must RSVP.
