Weekend Wrap-Up June 16-18

We’ve done it again folks, Urban Parent has managed to dig up the best events, clubs, and programming going on in the HRM and let you in on it! There’s a fair bit of fun for Dad and many great things to do together!

1. This weekend there’s going to be a live performance that will engage everyone in the family! With flute, harp, dance, and some squid for good measure, Inner Space Concerts presents an intimate musical experience featuring amazing local musicians and a score that includes the music of Debussy, Shankar and Takemitsu. One night only, folks! This Saturday, Deep Sea Conundrum is showing at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic at 7:30. Family admission (2 adults and children 4 and up) is $45. Make it a special sub-aquatic night to remember with this one-of-a-kind production!
2. Oooooh! Look what we found… a box of crayons! A colouring club called Crayon Box, that is! Crayon Box: Colouring Club meets at the Baptist Church on Stevens Road in Dartmouth. It is a free event on the third Saturday of the month from 10-12 and makes for a great excuse for all ages to come together on common ground. And don’t worry, you’re sure to find a spare box if you don’t bring your own colouring gear.
3. Get Dad what he really wants this Father’s Day, get him out doing something that he’s interested in! If it’s fishing and you don’t have a great old uncle to tell you where to go, here are a couple of places to get your search started on the old Internet: try Reddit and the provincial government website for sport fishing. Just don’t forget, licences are required to fish fresh water and they’re available at tons of places (here’s the list of approved fishing licence vendors—really simple gift idea).
   If it’s HTML and CSS Dad’s into, this Saturday’s Kids Learning Code event at Volta Labs would make the perfect Daddy/daughter or son day! It’s geared for beginner kids aged 8-13 and a parent or guardian, runs from 1-4, and the suggested donation is $30 per pair of coding enthusiasts.
   Is it cars? Well that’s easy, there’s a choice of car shows or the opportunity to hit both this weekend! The East Coast Exotic Car Show is at the Cunard Centre on Saturday from 10-4, has the most exclusive cars and is for a good cause: to raise fund for the Children’s Wish foundation. Tickets are $50 for a family of four. The 17th Annual Antique Car Show is being held at Memory Lane Heritage Village on Sunday from 10-3. The cost is $5, $0 for those under 13. Maybe this would be a great place to bring Grampy to. Get it? The cars are old?! We tease you because we love you, Dad!
4. Interested in celebrating and learning about a culture that is more than 2500 years old? Sign your family up! Actually, there’s no registration required and you can just show up at Sackville Landing on the Halifax Waterfront any time in the afternoon (1-5) on Sunday for Tirgan, the Festival of all things Persian. Admission is free and there will be delicious and beautiful food, traditional Iranian music, dance, and handicrafts.***This just in: due to inclement weather, Tirgan has been postponed until Sunday June 25th from 12-5 at the same location. Good news is they will have a computer games station and a dance dome for the kids! ***
5. You may have noticed on the Urban Parent Calendar (or if you walked into the library and yours were the only kids to show up for that particular crafternoon) that many of the regular scheduled events at the Halifax Public Libraries have gone on hiatus… well the libraries have changed up their programming for the summer and it’s all about reading! Registration for Summer Reading Club opens this Saturday, June 17 and the end of the month is awash with Summer Reading Kick Offs! From Bedford to Musquodoboit, Tantallon to Woodlawn, dig into reading at your family’s nearest location.
