Say you have a family of three kids with different interests: the fanciful one, the artist, and the daredevil…appease them all with these three delightful all ages events we found for you downtown on Saturday. Some time travelling, a collaborative art project, and skateboarding! As for Sunday, cookies! Everyone’s favourite.
1. Don’t just spy over the fence, dress up and take part in the Time Travellers’ Picnic in The Public Gardens! It’ll be a lot of fun for kids to marvel in the midst of a motley gathering of dilettantes and ne’er-do-wells, so help them get their best steampunk getup together and meet the rest of the aethernauts at the Main Garden Gates at 1. Following the picnic, there will be a guided tour of the gardens, prizes for best picnics and costumes will be given out, pictures will be taken, and Victorian parlour games will take place. All costumes from the past and future are welcome and there is no cost to partake. The Jules Verne Phantastical Society invites you to be tourists of time in your own town!
2. Keep with us on this historical theme and apply it to a neat collaborative art project: rotoscoping! Rotoscoping is a simple animation technique that traces film frames and this particular project is using footage taken shortly after the Halifax Explosion. Frames traced in this event will be used in the creation of a short animated film reflecting on the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion to be broadcast on CBC TV later this year. The Rotoscope Drawing Party takes place on Saturday from 2-4:30 at Wonder’neath on 2891 Isleville Street, and just like everything on this list, there is no cost. The youngest rotoscoper who has taken part in one of these events, so far, was five, and the kid enjoyed it! There are no age restrictions, bring the littles! Anyone can have a go, and maybe their drawing will make it into the final project…
3. The biggest skateboarding event of the summer is happening this Saturday from 6-9. The annual summer Pro Skates Bowl Jam is going down (and up and down again) at The Halifax Commons Skatepark. Vans is sponsoring a barbecue and cash prizes, plus there will be tons of other giveaways.
4. Who doesn’t love a cookie? Have them decorate their very own at Pier 21 under the instruction of an expert baker. This delicious homage to summer at the Museum will take place on Sunday at 2. Please register for the tasty event by emailing publicprograms@pier21.ca or programmationpublique@quai21.ca. There is no cost, cookies and decorating material will be provided. Please note that attending this event does not include admission to Pier 21’s fabulous exhibitions, including the newly renovated Pier 21 Story and Legacies 150, a series of 13 interactive photo essays. Adult admission to the Museum is $14.50, youths are $9.25, 5 and under are free.
