The weekend is coming and Urban Parent has found something for everyone, events for all to enjoy: books, making, magic, snowshoeing, wild animals, yoga, coffee, live music. Bust open that front door, leave the chores behind, and get out there!
- If you’re searching for something magnificent and/or magical, Chapters has it going on this weekend! On Saturday from 11-12 at their Halifax location in Bayers Lake, !ndigo Kids presents The Most Magnificent Event. Perfect for young school-agers to make—and unmake—things with an activity book inspired by Ashley Spire’s The Most Magnificent Thing.
Sunday afternoon, make it A Magical Afternoon! From 12-3, drop into Chapters Dartmouth and join the Hal-Con Street Team for storytime, games, and activities for kids of all ages. Please be advised, this event could also be magnificent.
- If this weekend gives us snow as fluffy and delicious as it did last weekend, and if it stays that way for more than, say, an hour, what a great weekend it would be to try snowshoeing! Shubenacadie Wildlife Park is the place to do it. If there is the snow, they have the shoes. It’s free and it’s an ongoing event every Saturday and Sunday for the rest of the season. Best to give a call after 9AM 902-758-2040 before you head out (Highway 102, Exit 9, 45 minutes from Halifax) to ensure the facility is open as inclement weather or unsafe conditions may cause it to be cancelled. And good news, the Wildlife Park IS open on weekends from 9-3. Though some of the animals will be hibernating, admission is only $3.50 for adults, $1.75 for those 6-17.
- Halifax Early Childhood School is having an open house and this time there is yoga! For kids! And it’s free! And they will give you a cup of coffee! What more could a parent of a toddler or preschooler ask for on a Saturday morning between 10-11:30? Great early childhood education? Well, HECS has that too. Drop into their location at 5498 Inglis Street, let the children play, and learn why Halifax kids love going there.
- Have you been feeling less hip and cool since you started a family? Still a star but missing the bar? Looking for something to do that you will enjoy just as much if not more than your kids? Well good news, this weekend comes with several opportunities to BYOBB to establishments where liquor is sold. Phew, right? The In the Dead of Winter Society presents a Bluegrass Brunch with The Montgomery St. Band this Saturday at The Local on Gottingen from 11:30-2. Admission is $5 for anyone 10 and older, brunch is priced reasonably, and there are drink specials.
Get on down to Freeman’s for a live music matinee! No cover to have a late lunch with Joe Butcher on guitar and vocals on Sunday at 2 on Quinpool Street, or Robertson Kent in Sackville also Sunday at 2. You probably already know that their pizza is the best in town, but have you ever had one of their strawberry milkshakes? Do!
On Sunday from 11-3:30 Unchained Kitchen and Chain Yard Cider on Agricola presents a neat little event they call BYOBB, which, if you haven’t caught on yet, stands for bring your own baby (or kid, kids are welcome too). Great food, cider made onsite, and activities for the small ones!
