Weekend Wrap-up: Sept 1-3, 2012

How is it that last weekend of summer holidays already? There are lots of fun things on the go for the long weekend, making it easy to ignore! 1. Join Parks Canada at the Halifax Citadel for a Living History War Encampment, and discover two pivotal events in the making of North America: the American Revolution and the War of 1812. 2. Celebrate the return of Sandjam to the Halifax Waterfront! Halifax is the first ever city to host this tournament back-to-back and will be the only FIVB beach event in North America for 2012. The five day tournament features a Main Draw of 32 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams for the first time, as the competition for players under 21 continues to grow in both size and stature. With over 30 competing countries, hundreds of visiting delegates and thousands of spectators, attendance and visitation to the waterfront is expected to grow to 20,000 this year. 3. On Monday, join the Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council for this year's annual Labour Day Celebration, including a March, Rally, Speeches, Community BBQ, Free Music Concert and more! 4. A modern take on the classic tale of Hansel and Gretel comes to the Atlantic Fringe Festival. Sure to please younger audiences!  Join Hansel and Gretel as the two children travel through the forest trying to find their way home. As they journey they stumble across a gingerbread house and they eat it. That’s when the adventures really begin! 5. Head to the Alderney Landing Cultural Convention Centre for the Arts & Cultural Freedom Festival showcasing arts and culture through quality performance. The festival will feature the talents of African Nova Scotians in various artistic genres, including spoken word, gospel music, R&B, urban, country music, jazz, hand drumming, African dance etc.. The festival also provides the opportunity for African Nova Scotian entrepreneurs to set-up commercial kiosks such as basket weaving, quilting, silk-screening, wood crafts, catering, accessories and more.
