Weekend Wrap-up: March 29-30, 2014

1. Admission is free this weekend at the Art Gallery of NS, thanks to a very generous gift from Scotiabank. They’ll be open noon to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday. So take a tour or just visit Nova Scotia’s great art collection!

2. Go to East Coast Combat Hapkido Academy Sat for a Free Self Defence Seminar for Teens. This seminar is also open to parents and will introduce the participants to simple and effective Hapkido techniques for self-defence. No special skills or previous experience is necessary. Participants will learn how to defend against situations such as being grabbed, being pushed against a wall with either one or two hands, being grabbed from behind, hair grabs, or facing more than one instigator/bully or assailant.

3. Get out the pom-poms cause this is one event you don’t want to miss. The Cheerleading and Dance National Championship will be held at the Halifax Forum from March 29-30th. Teams from all levels will compete and professional judges from all over North America will be in attendance.

4. Earth Hour is the world’s largest movement for action on climate change. During Earth Hour, Saturday from 8:30-9:30, hundreds of millions of people around the world turn off their lights for one hour to support a future where climate change is no longer a threat. So turn out the lights, power down and talk to your kids about why taking action on climate change is important.

5. Who explores a coral reef, discovers a seaweed farm and joins the jellyfish ballet – all before snack time? The Backyardigans! Pablo, Tyrone, Tasha, Uniqua and Austin are back on stage, singing and dancing and ready to plunge sea deep into adventure. Dive into the action as these five friends explore clues, discover underwater magic, and match wits with an egocentric, seaweed farming octopus and a pair of playful (but messy!) dolphins. With a splashy range of song-and dance styles to wade along to – including psychedelic soul, Bollywood, bossa nova, and more – our heroes save the day!

6. Billabong and SANS are excited to announce the 2014 Nor’easter Surf Contest at Lawrencetown Point in Lawrencetown Provincial Park. The contest will run the first weekend day with surf available, from March 29th to April 13th. Easily the most hard core surfing event in Canada, this event tests the best surfers on the East Coast of Canada against the elements to crown a Men’s, Women’s, Boy’s, and Girl’s winter champion!
