Let’s Decorate: Button Art

I couldn’t resist sharing my most recent project this month, as it’s the perfect thing for kid’s rooms and playrooms. I love original art, but it’s often the price tag that keeps most of us away. So, although this is not an original oil on canvas, it’s still pretty special and one of a kind, and best of all it’s so simple that anyone armed with a glue gun can do it.
I had wanted to do some button art for such a long time but was waiting for the right project to come along where it would fit in and complement perfectly. When I began decorating a sweet little girl’s room, I knew that this would be just right.

I began by finding a simple image of what I wanted to create, which was the letter M and a very simple butterfly. I put a piece of cardstock under the image and traced the image with a pen, pressing very hard. This gives you a clear outline for your buttons without having messy lines on the paper. After you have this complete, all you need to do is glue on buttons. You should use different sizes and colour variations to make it interesting, but other than that, there are really no rules. It’s a blank slate for pattern, colour and texture – you can’t really ask for more from a design perspective! Here’s a quick list of supplies that you’ll need to get started. Have fun!
For a project like this one, you’ll need:
·       A frame
·       A simple image of what you’d like to create
·       A piece of cardstock
·       Lots of buttons in your colour scheme
·       A glue gun and glue
