Weekend Wrap-Up Oct. 20-22, 2017

It was so hard for us to pick four special events for this Weekend’s Wrap-Up, so we didn’t! There are a total of seven and they are all either free or priced low. From a variety of bright lights, to a new art space down town, and a Halloween sneak peak, there is a plethora of events going on in and around Halifax this weekend, folks!

  1. Light it up! Dust off your oil lamp and wish your way to the The Diwali Carnival, an Indian Festival of Lights, at the Halifax Exhibition Centre on Saturday and Sunday from 11-8. It will be a rich display of Indian culture, food, art, music, dance, henna, fashion, and mind-blowing fireworks. Admission is just $2.
  2. Keep it glowing… The Atlantic Region’s Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada is hosting Light the Night Walk Halifax 2017, starting at the Garrison Grounds. The walk takes about an hour and is open between 5 and 9. This event funds vital patient support services, advocacy, and lifesaving research. Fill an evening with inspiration, white, red and gold lanterns, and walk leisurely with family and friends, bringing light to the dark world of cancer.

  1. …And let the light shine! The Responsive International Light Art Project opens Wednesday-Saturday evening from 7-12 at public sites in Downtown Halifax. It’s a free event and guided tours are at 8 beginning at the Art Bar at Anna Leonowens Gallery on Granville St. Amaze your eyes after the sun goes down at City Hall, the Art Gallery of NS, Black-Binney House, St. David’s Church, Dalhousie School of Architecture, and the Halifax Central Public Library.

  1. PSA: New Community Art Space in Downtown Halifax! The Parish House Studio is having a drop-in session Create Space for Kids and Families from 9-11 on Saturday. Experiment with watercolors, learn some new masking techniques, or pick your own project. This event is hosted by St. Paul’s Artist-in-Residence, local animator/illustrator Nathan Little.

  1. A sneak peak into Halloween… Mount Saint Vincent University has set up a Haunted House to scare you silly for one night only—Saturday from 6-11. The  Rosaria Student Centre Lobby (the building part of the way up the hill) is haunted! During the first hour (6-7), the fear factor will be turned down a notch for the littler kids. Admission is $7 (free under 5) and proceeds go to Shelter Nova Scotia. Also, Dartmouth North Public Library has built Halloween Escape Room! Be there with your ingenuous older ones at 2:30 on Saturday. And like all library events, there is no charge.

The fun doesn’t stop there, Haligonians, Dartmouthians, Bedfordites, Sackvillians, and those from the far-flung corners of the HRM, check out the Urban Calendar for even more events and great things going on around town!
