Weekend Wrap-Up, Jan 24-26, 2020

Get reading, get together, get out, get an RV!

1. Read, play a game, tell a joke, follow a recipe… What are you going to do to encourage literacy on this year’s Family Literacy Day? There are so many choices… Words are everywhere! Family Literacy Day gives you the excuse to read together! It is a national awareness initiative held annually on January 27 to point out the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Just 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically and can help parents improve their skills as well. Visit the ABC Family Life Literacy website to learn more about what you can do in 15 minutes.

2. We are Stronger Together! Take part in an interactive youth event this Saturday as they highlight and demonstrate various arts-based ways including theatre, dance, and photography, to take action against discrimination. It goes from 1-3 at the Halifax Central Library, open to youth ages 15-30, and admission is FREE! For more information, please contact Zahra Dhubow at zdhubow@isans.ca. This event is put on in partnership by African Diaspora Association of the Maritimes (ADAM), Immigration Francophone de la Nouvelle-ÉcosseISANS, and YMCA Centre for Immigrant Programs.

3. It’s time for a Momma Social! Hurry and book your ticket to escape to the next social on Friday, January 24th, 7-9. This month at the Modern Momma Hair Studio, they are going to be making naturally-based hand sanitizers from essential oils. A $5 ticket covers supplies. There will be snacks and if you want some curls, they will put them in your hair! The Hair Studio is located at 121 Chandler Dr in Lower Sackville. This sounds like a lot fun!

4. Is summer calling you? Love the great outdoors? Get revved up at the Halifax RV Show & Sale! January 23-26, head to the biggest indoor Sports and RV Show in Atlantic Canada for some inspiration for your next hike, camping trip, or family road trip adventure. Basically, if it has anything to do with the great outdoors in Atlantic Canada, you’ll find it at the show. Head over to their website for tickets! Do not spend this summer wishing you had have found that deal on the ideal pop-up trailer, backroad map, or axe that you could only find at a show like this – there are over 100 exhibitors!
